Death Valley Prayer

1. You're driving through Mojave, you pass through Inyokern
Trona is the last town you'll see till you return
and you feel the heat rising as you're dropping further down ..
and if hell is death valley, let me go there.
2. Now when L.A. slowly settles like a quicksand over me
and the green and growing mountains feel like too much company
then I head out to a desert that's deeper than the sea ..
and if hell is death valley, let me go there.
3. There's no pine to shift the wind around, no oak to shade the sun
and the dunes they have no memory of where they might have been
and the sky hangs low with nothing sharp to snag it's belly on ..
and if hell is death valley, let me go there.
4. Now some folks say I'm crazy when I tell them where I went
but they haven't seen the moon rise from behind Zabriskie Point
like a spirit bound for glory at the burning of a saint
and if hell is death valley, let me go there.
5. Some times I think about those folks in the covered wagon days
who crossed the Amargosa in search of paradise
well they must have seen the devil in the marble canyon's blaze ..
and if hell is death valley, let me go there.
6. Now some folks find no comfort in a place so stark and bare
where the wind blows fierce and honest and it's hard to find a liar
but you're closest to creation when you come up from the fire ..
and if hell is death valley, let me go there.
7. You're driving through Mojave, you pass through Inyokern
Trona is the last town you'll see till you return
and you feel the heat rising as you're dropping further down ..
and if hell is death valley, let me go there.
